Metagame Mentor: The Modern Impact of Lorwyn Eclipsed

Hello, and welcome back to Metagame Mentor, your weekly guide to the top decks and latest Constructed developments on the path to the Pro Tour. While the current round of Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs) features Standard, the next round's in-store Constructed format will be Modern. This next RCQ round will begin on April 4 and run until August 2.

To capture a snapshot of the Modern metagame, I analyzed over 700 successful tournament decks from events held after the online release of Lorwyn Eclipsed. The data shows that Boros Energy, Ruby Storm, and Dimir Midrange have all gained ground, with Boros Energy posting an excellent win rate at the recent Regional Championships and sustaining that momentum.

Formidable Speaker leads the most-played cards from Lorwyn Eclipsed, with Wistfulness close behind. These new cards have been incorporated into a variety of Modern decks, including Eldrazi Ramp, Primal Prayers, Living End, and Grixis Shadow.

In Eldrazi Ramp, Formidable Speaker sets up powerful lines involving Emrakul, the Promised End. Primal Prayers uses the tutor effect to assemble its combo, while Living End and Grixis Shadow leverage Wistfulness and Moonshadow respectively.

The next round of Modern RCQs begins on April 4, marking the start of the 2026-27 premier play season. While Boros Energy will likely be a top contender, the diverse Modern format offers many viable strategies. Exciting times are ahead, so grab your deck and prepare to battle on the big stage!
