The Week That Was: A Vivid Draft at Magic Spotlight: Eclipsed

Valerie Jade's Fairytale Story: From Omniscience to the Magic Spotlight

All great Magic: The Gathering victory stories have humble beginnings, and Valerie Jade's is no exception. The San Francisco native's path to winning the Magic Spotlight: Eclipsed event in Toronto earlier this year can be traced back to a conversation with a friend that changed everything.

In January 2025, Jade witnessed a match where World Champion Nathan Steuer was "crushed by Omniscience combo on turn four two games in a row." This piqued her interest, and after discussing the deck with her housemate Laurel, she decided to pick it up and start playing events with it. Laurel's encouragement proved to be a pivotal moment, as Jade's résumé soon blossomed with impressive finishes in both Standard and Limited events.

Jade's breakthrough came when she qualified for her first Pro Tour in 2026 after a "miracle" 9th-place finish at a Regional Championship. Though she lost her Round 16 requalification match, the experience was invaluable, and less than a week later, Jade found herself competing in the Spotlight Series event in Toronto.

Leaning on the lessons learned from her Pro Tour preparation, Jade navigated the Spotlight event confidently, including a "very intricate bluff" in Round 12 that paid off. Her drafting prowess shone through in the Top 8, where she opened Morcant's Loyalist and built a nearly perfect deck, securing the trophy.

Jade's victory was the culmination of a "fairy-tale story" in Magic for her, with the power of friendship playing a vital role. "So many amazing friends have carried me every step of the way," she said, reflecting on her remarkable journey over the past year.

Looking ahead, Jade has set her sights on an even more prestigious goal: qualifying for the World Championship. "At the start of 2025, I said I wanted to qualify for my first Regional Championship that year, my first Pro Tour in 2026, and my first World Championship in 2027. But, whoops, I qualified for my first Regional Championship in two months and my first Pro Tour that same year. And, my god, after watching Worlds from the side in 2025, I want to be in that room. And I really believe I can make it."
