Guglielmo Lupi: The Meteoric Rise of a Magic Prodigy
The 2026 Pro Tour season kicked off in style with Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed, where a plethora of innovative decks flourished, including Christoffer Larsen's Dimir Excruciator deck that won the longtime player his first Pro Tour title. But while all eyes were on Larsen's historic victory, another rising star emerged in the form of Guglielmo Lupi, who made a breakthrough to the Top 8 of the event.
Lupi, an up-and-coming competitor last year, entered 2026 with a reputation that's closer to an "end boss" than a challenger. His 2025 was a defining year, where he earned his first Top Finish and first premier-level trophy by winning the Magic Online Championships Showcase Season 2 in October. He then followed up that online success with a huge advance in tabletop play by reaching the finals of the European Regional Championship in November, cementing himself as a player to watch at the Pro Tour and beyond.
"Last year was defining for me. I leveled up as a player in ways I'm still trying to process; something just clicked, and my understanding of the game accelerated exponentially," Lupi reflected. "Looking back, I think shifting my focus toward Standard and Limited in 2024—my second year in the game—was the catalyst. Those formats force you to master the fundamentals in a way others don't."
Lupi's journey to the Pro Tour Top 8 was not without its challenges. His first Pro Tour appearance in Atlanta was a "reality check," where he went 3-5, but he used that experience to learn and improve. Returning from Atlanta, Lupi realized the importance of adapting to the ever-changing Pro Tour metagame, which he demonstrated by winning the MOCS with an innovative Broodscale list and securing his World Championship invite.
The turning point for Lupi came when he reached the finals of the Regional Championship in Antwerp, proving to himself that he could compete with the very best. This success, combined with joining the prestigious Team Handshake, set the stage for his breakthrough at Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed.
At the Pro Tour, Lupi's Five-Color Rhythm deck served him well, and he also had a strong draft performance, going undefeated on Day One. When the dust settled, Lupi celebrated his first Pro Tour Top 8 finish, a significant achievement in his blossoming career.
"With the winnings from the MOCS and Antwerp, I made the decision to go full-time in 2026," he explained. "Since then, joining Team Handshake has been a game changer. We worked incredibly hard for the Standard Spotlight Series events to prep for Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed, which led to a huge result in Lyon where both Simon Nielsen and I made Top 8 of the event with our tuned Cub list."
Lupi's success at the Pro Tour is not just about natural skill but a deep commitment to mastery. He has learned to push away distracting thoughts and stay fully present in the game, focusing on the immediate game state and what he can do with the cards in his hand. This mental fortitude, combined with his technical understanding of the game, has been the key to his recent success.
Looking ahead, Lupi is determined to keep proving himself on the biggest stages. The World Championship is the ultimate goal, and with three invites already secured, he is well on his way to cementing his place among the elite of the Magic: The Gathering community. As he continues to push his limits and chase his dreams, Lupi's journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring players everywhere.
