Universes Beyond Fully Embraces MTG Arena: What You Need to Know

The relationship between Universes Beyond and digital Magic has had a rocky start. For a while, it looked like Arena players might miss out on some of the most high-profile crossovers in the game's history. But in 2025 and 2026, Wizards of the Coast has made a decisive turn: Universes Beyond is coming to MTG Arena in full force, and the upcoming release schedule reflects just how committed they are to making it happen.

From Workaround to Full Embrace: The Through the Omenpaths Story

When Wizards of the Coast first launched the Universes Beyond program — bringing in IPs like Warhammer 40,000, The Lord of the Rings, and Doctor Who — the plan was to keep these crossover sets largely separate from the competitive digital environment of MTG Arena. Licensing deals, brand restrictions, and concerns about the Eternal feel of Standard were all cited as reasons why some sets would not appear on digital platforms.

To bridge the gap, Wizards introduced Through the Omenpaths: a program that creates digital-only "Universes Within" versions of Universes Beyond sets. These cards are mechanically identical to their tabletop counterparts but feature original Magic artwork, new card names, and lore that fits within the Multiverse. The first Through the Omenpaths set (OM1) launched on September 23, 2025, as the digital counterpart to Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man.

The Big Reversal: Marvel on Arena

Everything changed on June 16, 2025, when Wizards reversed course and announced that Magic: The Gathering | Marvel's Spider-Man — and all future Marvel crossover sets — would receive full MTG Arena support. Players who had already opened Through the Omenpaths packs were automatically granted the official Marvel-branded versions of those cards and could switch between the two art treatments at will.

This was not a minor policy tweak. It signaled a fundamental shift in how Wizards views the relationship between Universes Beyond and the game's most popular digital platform. Arena is the entry point for millions of new players, and keeping high-profile crossovers off it was becoming increasingly difficult to justify from both a business and player experience perspective.

The 2026 Arena Lineup

The 2026 schedule confirms three major Universes Beyond sets arriving on MTG Arena, alongside regular in-universe releases:

  • Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes — Available on Arena June 23, 2026 (tabletop June 26). This massive set draws from across the entire Marvel Universe, from legendary Super Hero teams to world-ending villains.
  • Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit — Confirmed for Arena in August 2026. Players will join Bilbo, Thorin, and Gandalf on the journey to the Lonely Mountain in fully supported Standard-legal Arena play.
  • Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek — Confirmed for Arena in November 2026, featuring characters and spaceships from across the entire franchise.

Half of All Sets Will Be Universes Beyond

Perhaps the most significant announcement from MagicCon: Atlanta was not about a single set but about the future direction of the entire game. Wizards confirmed that going forward, half of all sets released each year will be Universes Beyond. In-universe sets and crossover sets now share equal billing in the release calendar.

This is a profound statement about where Magic is heading. For longtime players who prefer Dominaria, Ravnica, and other established planes, it is a lot to process. For Arena players who want to play with their favorite fictional universes in card form, it is excellent news. The competitive implications are real too — in formats like Standard, which rotate and allow only the most recent sets, Universes Beyond cards will regularly be part of the meta.

What This Means for Arena Players

The practical takeaway for Arena players is straightforward: you no longer need to worry about being left behind when a high-profile crossover launches. The Through the Omenpaths workaround still exists for any set where licensing truly prevents a direct digital release, but based on the current trajectory, it is expected to be used rarely if at all.

Draft and Sealed events on Arena will regularly feature Universes Beyond sets alongside in-universe releases. Standard and Brawl will include characters from Marvel, Middle-earth, Star Trek, and Final Fantasy alongside cards from Bloomburrow, Innistrad, and wherever Magic's story takes us next. The Multiverse just got a lot bigger — and a lot more crowded.

Whether you see this as Magic evolving with the times or straying too far from its roots, one thing is certain: the wall between Universes Beyond and MTG Arena has come down for good.
