The 2026 RCQ Season is Here: Modern Format
The second round of Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs) for 2026 kicks off on April 4 and runs through August 2. This season, RCQs at WPN game stores will be held as Modern Constructed or Limited events — and Modern is where the action is.
Whether you're a seasoned Modern grinder or picking up the format for the first time, understanding the current metagame is your ticket to qualifying for the Regional Championship. Here's your complete guide to the top decks and how to prepare.
The Modern Metagame: March 2026
Modern is in a healthy and diverse state right now, with multiple viable archetypes across aggro, combo, control, and midrange. Here are the top 10 decks by metagame share, with their key cards and what makes them tick.
1. Boros Energy — 20% of the Metagame

The undisputed king of Modern. Boros Energy combines the most efficient threats in the format with an energy subtheme that provides incredible card selection and staying power.
Key Cards:
- Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury — The format's best threat. Escapes from the graveyard repeatedly, gaining life and dealing damage.
- Ocelot Pride — One of the most powerful one-drops ever printed. Creates token armies quickly.
- Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer — The iconic Modern one-drop. Generates mana and card advantage on every hit.
Why it's #1: The combination of early aggression, resilient threats, and the ability to grind long games makes Boros Energy incredibly hard to attack from any angle.
2. Jeskai Blink — 8% of the Metagame
A value-oriented deck that abuses enter-the-battlefield triggers with blink effects. It combines the best of Boros Energy's threats with blue card advantage.
Key Cards:
- Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer — Early pressure and mana advantage.
- Solitude — Free removal that can be blinked for repeated value.
Strength: Excellent against creature-based strategies and can out-value midrange decks in longer games.
3. Ruby Storm — 6.6% of the Metagame

A fast combo deck that chains rituals and cost reducers to generate massive amounts of mana, then wins with a lethal storm spell or massive X spell.
Key Cards:
- Ruby Medallion — The engine that makes the deck tick. Reduces the cost of every red spell.
- Manamorphose — Free spell that fixes mana and draws a card. Essential for storm count.
Strength: Can win as early as turn 2-3. Punishes decks that lack interaction.
4. Eldrazi Tron — 6.5% of the Metagame
A big-mana deck that assembles the Tron lands (Urza's Tower, Mine, and Power Plant) to cast devastating Eldrazi threats ahead of schedule.
Key Cards:
- Thought-Knot Seer — Hand disruption on a 4/4 body. Brutal when powered out on turn 2-3.
- Ugin, the Spirit Dragon — Board wipe and win condition rolled into one.
Strength: Goes over the top of fair decks. The Tron lands provide an unmatched mana advantage.
5. Affinity — 6.1% of the Metagame
The classic artifact aggro deck is back in force, leveraging cheap artifacts and powerful payoffs for a blazing-fast clock.
Key Cards:
- Mox Opal — Free mana from your artifact count. One of the most powerful cards in the format.
- Mishra's Bauble — Free artifact that replaces itself. Enables metalcraft and affinity.
Strength: Explosive starts that can overwhelm opponents before they set up.
6. Amulet Titan — 3.8% of the Metagame

A ramp/combo hybrid that uses Amulet of Vigor to untap bounce lands for explosive mana, searching up powerful lands with Primeval Titan.
Key Cards:
- Primeval Titan — The deck's namesake win condition. Finds any two lands on attack.
- Amulet of Vigor — Makes bounce lands tap for mana immediately, enabling explosive turns.
Strength: Can produce turn-3 Titans consistently. Very difficult to interact with through traditional removal.
7. Domain Zoo — 3.4% of the Metagame
An aggressive multicolor deck that leverages the domain mechanic (counting basic land types) for powerful effects.
Key Cards:
- Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer — Early pressure and resource generation.
- Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury — Recurring threat that stabilizes against aggro.
- Tribal Flames — Deals 5 damage for 2 mana in this deck. Incredible rate.
8. Goryo's Vengeance — 3.2% of the Metagame
A combo deck that cheats massive creatures into play from the graveyard using Goryo's Vengeance for devastating one-shot kills.
9. Neobrand — 3% of the Metagame
An all-in combo deck that uses Griselbrand to draw massive amounts of cards and win in a single explosive turn.
10. Izzet Prowess — 3% of the Metagame

A tempo-aggro deck that chains cheap spells to pump prowess creatures for lethal damage in just a few attacks.
Key Cards:
- Slickshot Show-Off — The new prowess powerhouse. Can deal lethal in a single turn with enough spells.
- Mishra's Bauble — Free spell that triggers prowess and provides information.
Preparing for Your RCQ: Essential Tips
- Know the top 5 matchups inside out. Boros Energy, Jeskai Blink, Ruby Storm, Eldrazi Tron, and Affinity represent over 47% of the metagame. You'll face at least 2-3 of these.
- Pack graveyard hate. Cards like Rest in Peace and Surgical Extraction are effective against multiple top decks.
- Have a plan for Boros Energy. It's 1 in 5 matches. Board wipes, going over the top, or faster combos are your best bets.
- Practice your sideboarding. Modern games 2 and 3 are where matches are won. Know exactly what comes in and out for every matchup.
- Check your local RCQ schedule. Events run from April 4 through August 2 at WPN stores. Register early — popular events fill up fast.
Today's B&R Update: Food Chain has been banned in Historic due to the TMNT combo with Sigardian Evangel. No changes in Modern — the format remains as-is for the entire RCQ season.
Good Luck at Your RCQ!
The Modern format is in a great place with diverse viable strategies. Whether you're sleeving up Boros Energy, storming off with Ruby Storm, or crushing with Eldrazi, preparation and metagame knowledge are your biggest edges. See you at the Regional Championship!
