The Week That Was: Putting the Spotlight on Magic Spotlight: The Avatar

Spotlight Series Shines Bright with Two Champions

The Magic Spotlight Series, the spiritual successor to the Grand Prix super-weekends, continued its exciting run last weekend as players from around the world competed for the top prizes. In a throwback to the old Grand Prix days, two Spotlight events took place simultaneously—one in Lyon, France, and the other in Atlanta, Georgia—with vastly different champions emerging victorious.

In Lyon, Simon Nielsen, one of the most accomplished Magic players in the world, claimed victory in Magic Spotlight: The Avatar with his Simic Ouroboroid deck. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Kye Nelson, a relative newcomer to the competitive scene, won Magic Spotlight: The Avatar in Atlanta with his innovative Bant Airbending list.

Nielsen, a fixture in the Magic community known for his friendly demeanor and incredible competitive record, has been working on maintaining his focus after winning tournaments. His mantra of "one game at a time" helped him navigate the 746-player field in Lyon and secure the trophy. The win earned him a spot at the upcoming Pro Tour, where he will look to continue his impressive run.

On the other side of the globe, Kye Nelson, a Limited specialist who had not competed in a major event in over a decade, emerged victorious in Atlanta. Despite not considering himself a dedicated Standard player, Nelson put in the work to refine a Bant Airbending deck, which included the key card Interdimensional Web Watch. His performance earned him a spot at the upcoming Pro Tour, where he hopes to make the most of his return to competitive Magic.

The Magic Spotlight Series has quickly become a hub for high-level competitive play, with the two champions last weekend showcasing the diversity of the player base. While Nielsen is a seasoned veteran, Nelson's comeback story adds an exciting new narrative to the event. As the 2027 Magic Limited Championship qualifiers also kicked off, the Spotlight Series continues to provide opportunities for players of all skill levels to shine on the big stage.
