Wizards Announces 2027 Booster Changes: God Packs, No Foil Commons and Uncommons

Magic: The Gathering booster pack

Wizards Is Changing Boosters in 2027: God Packs, No Foil Commons and a New Name

Wizards of the Coast has published Updating Our Boosters in 2027, announcing the biggest change to booster contents in years. Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, every Magic Multiverse set will get God Packs, Japan Showcase cards in standard boosters and higher foil rare and mythic rates, while foil commons and uncommons disappear. Play Boosters are also renamed Booster Packs.

Wizards says none of this comes with a price change. Below is everything that was announced.

What Is Coming

God Packs in every Magic Multiverse set

God Packs are boosters made entirely of rares and mythic rares. They start with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm and apply to every Magic Multiverse set after it.

  • Standard Booster Packs: 1 in every 1,000 packs. A God Pack contains 1 God Pack celebration card, 10 non-foil rare/mythic rare cards, 2 non-foil Booster Fun rare/mythic rare cards and 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rare/mythic rare cards.
  • Collector Boosters: 1 in every 300 packs. A God Pack contains 1 God Pack celebration card, 1 foil land, 3 foil default frame rare/mythic rare cards, 3 non-foil Booster Fun rare/mythic rare cards and 5 foil Booster Fun rare/mythic rare cards.

Japan Showcase cards in standard boosters

Japan Showcase cards, which until now were exclusive to Collector Boosters, will appear in the wildcard slot of standard Booster Packs, in traditional foil.

Higher foil rare and mythic rates

The drop rates for foil rare and mythic rare cards are increasing across standard Booster Packs.

Play Boosters become Booster Packs

The name "Play Boosters" is retired. They are now simply called Booster Packs.

What Is Leaving

  • Standard Booster Packs: foil commons and uncommons are removed entirely. A foil card is no longer guaranteed in each pack, and when a foil does show up it will only be a rare or mythic rare.
  • Collector Boosters: two foil commons and one foil uncommon are removed, with no replacement cards. Some foil commons and uncommons remain, because they can no longer be found in standard Booster Packs.

Wizards' reasoning is that most people who open Collector Boosters mostly skip past these cards, and the stated goal is to make every pack opening feel more meaningful.

Timeline and Prices

  • Start: Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, then each following Magic Multiverse set.
  • Universes Beyond: these sets are expected to receive the changes in 2028.
  • Prices: Wizards states that none of these changes come with any adjustment to prices.
  • Feedback: Wizards has opened a Discord space to discuss the changes.

What It Could Mean for You (Our Take)

These points are our own reading of the announcement, not statements from Wizards:

  • Commons and uncommons lose their foil versions in boosters. If you collect foil commons or uncommons from a set, the 2027 sets will not supply them in packs.
  • Foils get rarer but better. With foil rares and mythics more likely and no foil filler, the foil you do open should be a rare or mythic.
  • Cracking packs for value: the God Pack odds are small (1 in 1,000 and 1 in 300), so they are a lottery ticket rather than something to plan around. Sealed prices and expected value per pack for the new sets are something we will keep tracking.

Until the changes arrive with Nauctis, current sets keep their current structure. You can check what a pack of today's sets is worth with our booster price tracker and EV calculator, try packs in the booster simulator, or browse sealed product in the store.
